Ningbo was one of China’s oldest cities with a history dating back to 4800 B.C. the Hemudu culture. Ningbo was known as a major trading port along with Yangzhou and Guangzhou in the Tang dynasty; thereafter, the major ports for foreign trade in the Song dynasty. Ningbo was one of the five Chinese treaty ports opened by the Treaty of Nanjing (signed in 1842) at the end of the First Opium War between Britain and China. During the war, British forces took possession of the walled city of Ningbo briefly after storming the fortified town of Zhenhai at the mouth of the Yong River on October 10, 1841. In 1864 the forces of the Taiping Rebellion held the town for six months.
Ningbo was once famed for traditional Chinese furniture production.

Sanya is situated on the southernmost tip of Hainan Province, lying between 1809′ and 1837′ latitude giving it the tropical monsoon climate of this region. Covering an area of 1919.58 square kilometers (about 741 square miles) with 209.1 kilometers (about 130 miles) long coastline, Sanya has many natural advantages. Possessing a number of excellent harbors, Sanya is an important port for import and export of trade with foreign countries. Therefore, Sanya is also named the ‘South Gate of China’ to stress its importance while it plays a vital role in the life of the southern part of China in areas of the economy and politics to transportation.
Sanya, at the southernmost tipof Hainan Island, is becoming the most popular destinations for vacationers from both China and the world. A coastal city with the tropical scenery, Sanya is like a pearl on a piece of green jade, the Hainan Island.
Sanya is a busy port and tourist resort on the southern tip of Hainan Island. It has an area of 1,887 square kilometers, and a population of 3.8 million.
